Art Valuations

Gainsboroughs provides comprehensive valuation oversight for individual artworks and collections across a broad range of legal, financial, fiduciary, transactional, and strategic requirements.

Valuations may include Liquidation Value, Fair Market Value, Retail Replacement Value, Market Value for auction consignment purposes, Marketable Cash Value, and Collateral Loan Value for art-secured finance considerations.

Additional valuation services may support Charitable Donation planning, Divorce Settlement proceedings, estate and succession matters, Charitable Remainder Trust structures, and broader wealth preservation objectives.

Each assessment is informed through recognised methodologies including: Income Approach, Cost Approach, and Comparative Market Data Approach, supported by extensive historical auction analysis, provenance review, condition assessment, rarity evaluation, and prevailing collector demand within the global art market.

Key Types of Valuations

Liquidation Value

The most probable price a piece will bring if the seller is forced to sell within a constrained time period (e.g., bankruptcy or urgent need for cash)

Fair Market Value

The price that would be agreed upon between a willing buyer and seller in an open market, with neither being under pressure to act. Used for tax, divorce, or estate planning.

Retail Replacement Value/ Insurance Value

The highest valuation, representing the cost to replace the item with a similar piece of equal quality in the current retail market, including taxes and commissions

Market Value (Auction/Consignment Value)

The value of the piece if sold in the open, competitive market, usually reflecting the likely "hammer price" at auction.

Marketable Cash Value

The Fair Market Value minus all associated selling costs, such as gallery fees or auction commissions

Collateral Loan Value

The value assigned by a principle lender when using artwork as security for a loan.
